A

Adelbrand's Pentacle
A pentacle of special powers which allows magicians to maintain control over their demon for multiple service.
Amulet
A protective charm that can fend off evil but cannot be actively controlled by its owner.
Amulet of Samarkand
An especially powerful protective charm created 3,000 years ago by the people of Central Asia. It is made of gold with a simple notched design and adorned with a jade stone in the middle.
Animating Parchment
A manuscript inscribed with a spell that brings a golem to life when inserted into its mouth.
Ankh
An Egyptian amulet; T-shaped, with a loop on top; it symbolizes life.
Apocrypha
A collection of Ptolemy's writings. It includes his method of traveling to the Other Place.
Aura
A colored nimbus that surrounds all living things but is invisible to most humans. It changes color depending on mood and is a useful indicator of a person's emotional state.

B

Black Tumbler
A spell that causes scarring and discoloration of the skin; used against Jakob Hyrnek and Kitty Jones by Julius Tallow. According to Bartimaeus, also used by the Banja people of Great Zimbabwe to make themselves more attractive.
Bulb of Silence
A spell that prevents others from hearing private conversations.

C

Charm
A magical formula or incantation, usually sung or spoken, for the purpose of securing another's favor. See also Glamour.
Cloak of Blackness
A power that protects a golem from the vision of spirit, human, or animal on all planes.
Cloak of State
A garment of considerable power, of black and purple, topped by a small gold brooch; interred in William Gladstone's sarcophagus.
Convulsions
A spell designed to shake its victim to pieces using flickering inky bands.

An incantation recited to send a demon back to the Other Place.

E

Elemental Sphere
A detonation device in the shape of an orb; it can be used effectively by magicians and commoners alike. Contains several elementals, spirits of fire, earth, air and water.
Essence
The fundamental, essential being of a spirit, wherein its identity and nature are contained.
The Eye of Ptolemy
A reference book, written by Ptolemy, on the mechanics of drawing demons from the Other Place. It is required reading for all magicians.

Five-Pointed Star
A simple hex in the form of a star, used to deter trespassers.
Fluxions
An incantation that engulfs aggressive magic and carries it away.

G

Gladstone's Staff
A potent talisman, containing several entities, which confers great power on its bearer. It's capable of destroying city walls and enemy armies.
Glamour
A spell that makes the user seem beautiful and attractive in the eyes of the beholder. See also Charm.
Glaze
A memory-loss spell.
Golem's Eye
An enchanted piece of clay, molded in the form of an eye, that sits on the golem's forehead and acts as a watch-eye to help its master control the creature.

A spell, often of an unpleasant or aggressive nature.

Indefinite Confinement Spell
A spell that perpetually confines a demon within a minute space such as a tobacco tin, bottle, or old lamp.
The Illuminated Circlet
A luminous hoop of light, triggered by an imp, that flares outward from a candle; designed to detect unwanted onlookers.
Inferno Stick
A weapon that emits a tall gout of flame.
The Inverted Skin
A particularly vexing torture spell that makes a djinni's motion difficult and conversation almost impossible.
Iron Cube
A binding spell designed to confine obstinate demons.

Lenses
Special eyeglasses that allow magicians to view several planes at once, helping to reveal a demon's true form.
Loew's Nominative Almanac
A book that lists all official names used by magicians between Prague's golden age and the present. Used during a magician's official Naming Ceremony.

M

Magician
A human who has the ability to summon and command supernatural beings to do his bidding.
Midnight
One of the two points of the day (the other is noon) in which the seven planes draw closest together, allowing humans glimpses of magical activity that would normally be invisible to them.
Mirror Illusion
A sophisticated spell that forms false images of large-scale objects.
Mournful Orb
A sphere within which spirits are imprisoned. It expands and contracts and is capable of capturing and destroying a spirit's essence with its touch.

An anklet that forces a woman's husband to obey her every whim.

The Obedient Breath
A type of conjuration formed by an expiration of air from the mouth and a magic sign. The air thus formed can be directed into various solid shapes.

Pentacle
A five-point star figure used as a tool for summoning and controlling spirits.
Pestilence
A bright green, poisonous cloud that emerges from the tomb of William Gladstone and is designed to guard his remains.
Philosopher's Stone
A fabled pebble credited with the ability to turn base metals into gold or silver.
Prague Cubes
Cubes with encased mites; capable of detonating a minor combustion. Used as a party gimmick by second-rate magicians.
Ptolemy's Gate
A method of reversing the normal summoning process, whereby a human may enter the realm where demons reside.
Pulse
A small green-blue sphere, about the size of a marble, visible only on the seventh plane; used to detect the level of magic in a given area.

Sacred Flame
In Ancient Rome, a sacred hearth and fire, tended by the vestal virgins and never allowed to die out; created in honor of Vesta, goddess of the hearth.
Scrying Glass
A disc within which an imp is imprisoned; used for spying from afar.
Seven-League Boots
Boots that can cover considerable distances in the smallest strides at the wearer's command.
Shriveling Fire
An incantation made up of 15 curses in five languages, used to destroy demons who deliberately disobey or refuse to carry out a command.
Stimulating Compass
An electric charge emitted from the five points of a pentacle; used as a form of punishment against rebellious demons.
Summoning Horn
A fearsome talisman used to summon even the most powerful demon from the Other Place.
Systemic Vise
Concentric bands of force used to slowly compress the midriff, which can incinerate a djinni's essence.

Talismans
Artifacts that have active magical powers and can be used at their owner's discretion (such as a flying carpet, seven-league boots, or enchanted sword).
