Ahnotep — A human servant serving Ptolemy.
Anne — A vivacious woman of forty; second-in-command of the Resistance. She has the ability to see through demon illusions-among other powers.

Archimedes — Greek mathematician, physicist, and inventor; Bartimaeus claims to have known the ancient scholar.

The Bearded Mercenary — Simon Lovelace's hired assassin who evaded capture for stealing the Amulet of Samarkand; also proved to be involved in the golem conspiracy and the demon revolt. [pg. 250, 267]

The Benefactor — A former magician and leading member of Society, who misleads the Resistance into believing that he is a sympathizer seeking to overthrow the magician rulers. His true identity is unknown. Borgias, The-Spanish-Italian noble family whose reputation was synonymous with greed and betrayal; one of the family's instruments of death was used against Kitty by the mysterious Benefactor.

Brahe, Tycho — Magician, astronomer, and gambler whose nose was cut off by a lucky stroke during a duel over a woman. Bartimaeus considers him the least offensive of his masters.

Burke, Mr. — A disgruntled magician involved in a conspiracy against the government.

Button, Harold — A magician, scholar, book collector, and incurable eccentric. Kitty Jones worked as his assistant.

Cathcart, Amanda — The owner of Heddleham Hall estate, the location of the Annual Parliamentary Conference and Winter Ball; she was a commoner betrayed by Simon Lovelace.

Collins, Bruce — A magician. Home Secretary in the British Government during the later stages of the American War.

Commoners' Alliance — An organization comprised of commoners who form mass protests and strikes against the American war.

Devereaux, Rupert — A magician, British Prime Minister and acting Chief of Police; the most powerful man in Britain, who succeeds in remaining in power through his abilities to play his colleagues off against one another.

Disraeli, Benjamin — A 19th Century sorcerer who, upon making a rude remark to one of William Gladstone's female friends, was challenged to a duel by the powerful magician.

Drew, Nicholas — A commoner and political agitator; one of the last surviving members of the Resistance and leading member of the Commoner's Alliance; possesses some resilience to magic.

Duvall, Henry — The former Chief of Police and commander of the elite Night Police who died in disgrace after being exposed as a conspirator behind the Golem Affair.

Eva — A member of the Resistance who has the power to see through demon illusions and has, to some degree, a resilience to magic.

Farrar, Jane — A formidable young magician, appointed Deputy Police Chief during the American War.

Fitzwilliam, Miss — A fourth-level magician and judge presiding over Kitty's court case.

Foukes, Mr. — A magician of the fourth level who works in the office of Internal Affairs.

Fox, George — proprietor of The Frog Inn.

Fred — A tall, rather spotty youth who is a member of the Resistance; he stole Nathaniel's scrying glass in conspiracy with a fellow Resistance member. He perished during the raid of Gladstone's tomb after putting up a valiant fight.

Fry, Marmaduke — The former Foreign Minister; a man of capacious appetite who was slain by an imp during an attempt to negotiate a truce between rebel guerillas and the British army.

Gilgamesh — In Babylonian legend, he was the king of Uruk. Bartimaeus claims to have helped him defeat the giant Humbaba.

Gladys — A blond woman in her twenties and member of the Resistance; is able to detect objects containing magical force.

Gladstone, William — The most powerful magician ever to become prime minister. He ruled more than 100 years ago.

Harknett, Ms. — A magician and former Home Secretary who was murdered after speaking out against Council policies.

Harlequin — A plump, elderly man of funereal temperament and one of Britain's top secret agents.

Hermit, The — In ancient times, an expert assassin; trained his disciples in numerous methods of foolproof murder. Four of his disciples tried to assassinate Ptolemy.

Hopkins, Clem — A clerk at the British Library; a commoner who claimed to be a scholar. An associate of the mysterious Benefactor and advisor to the Resistance, he is later revealed to be a conspirator behind the Golem Affair, the Lovelace Conspiracy, and the Demon Revolt.

Hyrnek, Grandmama — Jakob's grandmother. She gives Kitty a small, silver pendant in the shape of a teardrop, as a form of protection.

Hyrnek, Jakob — A childhood friend of Kitty Jones, who was wounded by the Black Tumbler.

Hyrnek, Karel — Jakob Hyrnek's father; a commoner and highly skilled book binder noted for printing magnificent spell books.

Jenkins, Clive — A minor, first-level magician and secretary in the Office of Internal Affairs who is engaged in a conspiracy against the government.

Jones, Kathleen (aka Kitty; aka Lizzie Temple; aka Clara Bell) — A young girl and leading member of the Resistance; a commoner who possesses a special ability to resist demon attacks. She assisted Nathaniel in exposing the Golem Affair and helped destroy the Demon Revolt.

Julia — In Ancient Rome, a Vestal Virgin consecrated to Vesta and to the tending of the Vesta's Sacred Flame; according to Bartimaeus, she would sneak away from the Flame at night to bet on the chariots at the Circus Maximus.

Kavka, Mr. — The magician who is blackmailed into creating the manuscript used to animate the golem.

Kavka, Karl and Mia — The captured children of Mr. Kavka; used to blackmail Mr. Kavka into writing the golem manuscripts.

Lime, Rufus — A fish-faced man; one of Simon Lovelace's confederates in the Lovelace Conspiracy and other devious plots against the government.

Loew — A great magician who created the first golem 400 years ago as a means of protecting the Jews against attacks by human and djinni alike.

Lovelace, Simon — The Deputy Minister for Trade; an ambitious, ruthless magician obsessed with gaining power over his rivals. Leader of a conspiracy to overthrow the government.

Lutyens, Rosanna — Nathaniel's former sweet-tempered art teacher, specializing in the instruction of technical drafting; also a commoner.

Makepeace, Quentin (aka the Benefactor) — A hack playwright known to be the Prime Minister's closest confidante; mastermind of the Golem Affair and the theft the Amulet of Samarkand. He perished in his ultimate plot to overtake the government.

Malbindi, Helen — A meek, soft-spoken magician who rose to become Foreign Minister.

Martin — A slight boy with dark eyes and a fiery and passionate disposition. A member of the Resistance who lost his parents to magicians and seeks revenge.

Master of Lamps — In Prague's heyday, a hereditary official among the court magicians who stalks along the castle hillside each afternoon instructing the imps, held captive within the lamps, in the colors and intensity required by the Emperor.

The Mercenary — A powerful commoner with exceptional resilience to magic. He was major conspirator involved several plots to overtake the government.

Meyrink — The Chief Minister who served the Emperor during the Siege of Prague.

Mortensen, Carl — A bland, middle-aged magician; Minister of War, who advocates the war against America.

Nathaniel (aka John Mandrake) — The young, ambitious, willful apprentice to Arthur Underwood who, after retrieving the Amulet of Samarkand and discovering the conspirators behind the Golem Affair, was promoted to Information Minister. A formidable and talented magician.

Palmer, Mr. — A frustrated second-level magician who works in the Home Office and was involved in a plot to overtake the government.

Pennyfeather, Mr. — The owner of an artists' supply shop in Southwark, London, and founder of the Resistance; affectionately referred to as "The Chief".

Phidias — A Greek magician and architect. Bartimaeus claims he built the Parthenon with the help of Atlas, a marid of unusual strength.

Pinn, Sholto — An eminent magician and merchant; owner of Pinn's Accoutrements in Piccadilly. [pg. 104-105]

Piper, Rebecca — A magician and assistant to John Mandrake at the Information Ministry.

Ptolemy (or Ptolemaeus) — An Egyptian boy magician, notable prodigy, and one-time master of Bartimaeus who, at a young age, devised a path into the demon world-the Other Place.

Ptolemy's cousin (or the king's son) — As prince of Egypt and heir to the throne, he is threatened by Ptolemy's popularity among the people and has makes several attempts on Ptolemy's life.

Purcell, Mr. — Nathaniel's teacher, primarily in the subjects of mathematics, modern languages, geography, history, and the sciences; also a commoner.

Ramses the Great — An Egyptian king who, Bartimaeus claims, had the biggest ego of any human he has had the misfortune of serving.

The Resistance — A group of young renegade commoners who possess an innate resilience to magic; determined to destroy the magicians' government.

Schyler, Maurice — A magician and former master to Simon Lovelace; a co-conspirator in Lovelace's evil scheme.

Sennacherib — King of Assyria circa 700 B.C. Bartimaeus claims to have been sent to assassinate this king by orders of Babylonian magicians.

Sindra, Mr. — Nathaniel's short-tempered music teacher.

Stanley — A paperboy and member of the Resistance; capable of perceiving faint, flickering radiance given off from any object containing magical force. He lured Nathaniel into an alley and stole his scrying glass.

Tallow, Julius — A third level magician and Head of Internal Affairs; A short, burly man of bullish build and temperament, distinguished by an unusual yellowish complexion.

Timothy — A member of the Resistance; capable of hearing magical activity.

Underwood, Arthur — A middle-ranking magician who worked for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and served as grudging mentor to Nathaniel.

Underwood, Martha — Arthur Underwood's diminutive wife and close friend to Nathaniel.

Whitwell, Jessica — The Minister of Security and head of the Tower of London; a very powerful and celebrated magician. Reckoned to be one of the four most potent magicians in the government. [pg. 69]

Withers — A junior level magician who was involved in a plot to overtake the government.
