A

Affa
A djinni who served Ptolemy and advised him on methods of departing the body. He died in battle trying to save his master.
Afrit
A demon of fire; the second most powerful form of spirit.
Ascobol
A djinni serving Nathaniel; usually takes on the form of a Cyclops.
Asmoral the Resolute
A djinni who was torn in two after refusing to follow his master's command to destroy Ianna, his closest ally and fellow djinni. The explosion caused the magician to also perish.
Atlas
A marid of unusual strength and muscular definition, employed by the Greek magician Phidias to construct the Parthenon. When the foundation was proven faulty, Atlas was charged to hold up the building indefinitely.

B

Bartimaeus
A witty and powerful 5,010-year-old djinni of the fourth-level, bound against his will to serving Nathaniel. Together they foiled many political conspiracies.
Baztuk (aka Bull-head)
An utukku; Bartimaeus destroyed his people during the battle at Al-Arish; now a sentry in the The Tower of London.
Blog
According to Bart's Journal, this is a subclass of foliots, characterised by ooze, fleshy folds and gills of blue-grey gristle. Magicians send them to harass their enemies in their sleep.
Borello
The demon used to occupy the human body of Nicholas Drew.

Castor
A courteous, efficient djinni who possessed a fiery pride and once served Nathaniel, but was dismissed after inciting a fight with other spirits.
Cormocodran
A humorless, third-level djinni serving Nathaniel; usually takes on the form of a man-boar.

Demon
An abusive term for a djinni or other supernatural being. Demons are the source for all magicians' power.
Djinni
A class of powerful spirits capable of changing form and influencing humankind; according to Bartimaeus, they also possess perfect night-sight.

Faquarl
A powerful djinni enslaved under Simon Lovelace and longtime enemy of Bartimaeus. He has long espoused collective rebellion against the magicians.
Foliot
A demon ranking lower than a djinni.
Fritang
A lesser djinni serving Nathaniel.

Ghul
A lesser djinni of an unsavory cast, keen on the taste of humans.
Golem
A giant made of animated clay. Its head contains two nominal eyes and a larger, more defined watch-eye that enables its master to administer control. Its mouth contains a magical manuscript that is the source of its power and renders it invulnerable to attack.

Hathor
In Egyptian religion, goddess of love and divine mother and protector of the newborn.
Hodge
An unprepossessing djinni in Nathaniel's service. Prone to sarcasm and to appearing as a vicious pangolin.
Homunculus
A tiny manikin produced by magic and often trapped in a bottle as a magician's curio.
Honorius
A ninth-level afrit, invulnerable to the magic of mere djinn, whose essence occupied the skeletal remains of the late William Gladstone and relentlessly guarded Gladstone's buried treasures. He went mad after one hundred years of such confinement.
Horla
A subclass of djinni appearing as shadowy apparitions to humans, causing madness and disease.
Humbaba
In Accadian mythology, Humbaba was a monstrous giant and guardian to the Forest of Cedars. Under the orders of a former master, Bartimaeus distracted the dim-witted giant and slew him.

Ianna
A djinni who had long been an ally to Asmoral, a fellow djinni who perished rather than bring about Ianna's demise.
Imp
A manipulative form of spirit lower in rank than marids, afrits, djinn, and foliots.

Jabor
A powerful djinni with a voracious appetite; enslaved by Simon Lovelace. In Ancient Egypt, he served Anubis, the god of the dead.

Marid
The most powerful rank of demon normally called to work under a magician's service. They radiate so much power that it's possible to track their movements by following a residual magical trail.
Median Magi
A priestly tribe of ancient Persia, whose fabled power over demons gave rise to the term magic.
Messenger Imp
A minor demon charged with carrying messages to magicians; usually after breakfast and shortly before sundown.
Mite
The lowest form of demon, possessing very little intelligence.
Mouler
A lowly form of demon.
Mwamba
A djinni who served Nathaniel. favours the form of a giant lizard wearing leather thigh boots and once worked with the Abaluyia tribes of Eastern Africa.

Naeryan
An afrit whose normal form involved an inky blue-black torso, three piercing eyes, and a multitude of spider-like limbs. She followed Nouda during the Demon Revolt.
Natterjack Impling
An unadventurous minor demon that resembles a dull sort of toad.
Nemaides
Julius Tallow's demon; charged to inflict the Black Tumbler upon Jakob and Kitty after accidentally damaging Tallow's Rolls-Royce.
Nittles
A messenger imp serving Simon Lovelace.
Nouda
One of the most fearsome entities ever recorded. He is rarely summoned by magicians and is the mastermind behind the Demon Revolt.
Nubbin
A minor djinni, scarcely better than a common foliot, who served as a sentry during the attack on Prague.

A savage afrit and personal servant to William Gladstone.
Purip
A lesser djinni who served Nathaniel.

Ra
Egyptian god of the sun.
Ramuthra
A mysterious being superior to almost all other demons; capable of mass destruction. So powerful, it requires at least four magicians to be summoned.

Scarlet Vexation
A minor imp, noted for spreading pestilence.
Search Sphere
A sturdy imp with giant scaly ears and a single bristled nostril, which makes it particularly sensitive to magical pulsation.
Shubit
Jessica Whitwell's djinni. Favours the guise of a bear.
Simpkin
A small lime-green , bow-legged foliot serving Sholto Pinn. One of the few spirits who enjoys his servile status; perished during a golem attack.
Spirit
Any supernatural being, from mites to marids. Magicians label them all demons.
Sprite
A lowly demon that is weaker than an imp.
Succubus
A seductively shaped djinni in female form.

A type of djinni known for its unintelligent devotion to violence; can be very easily fooled.

Wil-o'-the-wisp
Small spirits usually visible as flickering flames. They were once used by magicians to lure trespassers off remote paths into pits, quags, or (latterly) open manholes.
